Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

For wildlife lovers, a vacation in the Galapagos is often an old dream and a real “bucket list” experience. This remote island off the coast of Ecuador is home to some of the most unique wildlife on Earth, and offers the opportunity for some very close encounters. For those who want to take advantage of most opportunities to take animal photos, some specific tips from experts can help.
Tips for Photography at Holiday Galapagos Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

There are many generic tips for photographing wildlife (including the most basic, ie patient), but there are also some specific ones to capture great images of these remote island animals.

Be prepared

This suggestion has a double meaning: You need to be prepared in terms of equipment, but also at a situational level. Taking the right camera and accessories is essential, and SLRs with interchangeable lenses will produce far superior results to the iPhone, however up-to-date the model. The wildlife in the archipelago is unbelievably fearless, so there is no need for long focal length and long fixed lenses, but if you are serious, short and medium lens combinations are recommended. As a guide, consider (at least) the 18mm-70mm lens and the 100mm-400mm. Nature on Display: Tips for Shooting the Galapagos Wildlife

Another aspect of preparation is getting ready to get “money fired” without too much notice. Wild wildlife, however, and animals will not wait for you to focus, change openings and frame the scene perfectly – even though the Giant Tortoise Galapagos may be an exception. Read it every time and frankly, keeping your eyes peeled so you can take advantage of the situation as it appears.

Lighting

Due to the geographical position of the archipelago at the equator, the sun rises and sets rapidly, spends much of its time just above the head. This results in harsh and top-lit conditions that are often less conducive to capturing wildlife images. What you should aim for is low-side lighting, which creates greater interest in texture and shaded contours. Without the benefits of an artificial studio lighting, the only real solution is to get up early before the sun reaches overhead, or later at night when it goes down. An added bonus of this is that you can get some spectacular and dramatic pictures by using sunrise or sunset to give the backlight on your subject. Expose

Even if you set your SLR for automatic exposure, lighting and conditions in the archipelago are often beyond the reach of the most advanced camera metering system. For example, bright white plumage in Nazca Booby perched on black volcanic rocks will cause the camera to glow for darker areas, and then highlight it more deeply. A good tip is to use the +/- function on your camera, which will override the meter and fix one or two stops to expose the bird and not the rocks.

Think laterally

In addition to the technical aspects, the most important advice of the knowing experts is to think out of the box and actually take advantage of the incredible opportunities that you will encounter on Galapagos holidays. Do not just follow the crowd and photograph the animals from a static point of view – go down to the sand with Sally Lightfoot Crabs, ride high on rocks with the Marine Iguana, and cross into shallow rivers with weird Sea Lions (obviously keeping your camera protected). Being creative with angles is one of the surest ways to open up to this once-in-a-lifetime image.

Turned Good to Great

Meanwhile, for some people, the Galapagos holiday is quite a gift in itself, for others, catching amazing photographs is a very important aspect. Wildlife photography can, in essence, be a very challenging quest. And while being in the right place at the right time can reap amazing rewards, following a few tips to take advantage of those “timely, right place” moments can make the difference between good and good photos. Ice Climbing in Chamonix: What to Expect

Ice Climbing in Chamonix: What to Expect

For an athletic adventure that will really get your adrenaline pumping, look no further than ice climbing.
Ice Ice, Not For Babies…

Ice is unlike any other climbing surface. During the day its consistency changes massively, from hard and flaky in the morning to the soft in the afternoon, so the sport gets easier as the sun warms the ice later in the day. Every time you climb, the route will be slightly different and your guide will need to alter the route and the position of the rope anchor.

It’s unpredictable and has an element of danger, but that’s part of the reason why the sport is so exhilarating!

Physical Fitness: Are You Up to the Challenge?

To properly enjoy this sport, you need to be fit and prepared for the challenges of ice climbing. You should be fit overall, so start adding some more cardio to your workout routine a few months before your climbing trip to improve your endurance.

On top of this, you should incorporate some moves such as dead hangs, weight sit-ups, pull ups and overhead weighted lunges into your fitness routine to start working on the muscles you´ll be using when climbing.

Ensure You’re Equipped

This is an equipment-intensive sport – you’re going to need a climbing harness and helmet, two ice axes, boot crampons and special winter boots. Most lesson providers will be able to rent you these essential items at a fair price for very good quality gear; it may be a good idea to make sure you like the sport before investing a lot of money in specialist equipment.

On top of the equipment, you’re going to need top-of-the-range winter clothing and water-resistant trousers, coat and gloves – and don´t forget good sunglasses and factor 50 sun cream and lip balm.

Climbing in Chamonix

Chamonix is famed for its ice falls, and in the resort and surrounding area you can find over 200 routes for all skill levels. The icefalls at altitude tend to begin forming in December, with the best time to climb being January and February.

Equipment can be bought or rented in all sports shops in Chamonix, and there is a wide variety of different professional guiding organisations who offer ice climbing courses for beginners and intermediates to the sport.

There are great routes for all skill levels in and around the resort, making it a brilliant place to start out and progress during your trip.

How to Get There

Hop on one of the many frequent flights offered by budget airlines offering the UK to Geneva route. You can be in Geneva in under 2 hours from several UK locations, and in just 90 minutes if you´re travelling from London. Getting to Chamonix from Geneva will be the least demanding part of your trip, as Shuttle Direct has years of experience in providing comfortable and convenient transfers to Chamonix. From Geneva, you can even bring you equipment for free as long as you choose that option at the time of booking.

Accessing Medical Care in Cyprus: What Covers EHIC

Accessing Medical Care in Cyprus: What Covers EHIC

Cyprus is a beautiful holiday destination, famous for its stunning beaches and full of interesting antiques. A short flight to Cyprus takes you to a beautiful island that makes you feel a million miles from home – but Cyprus is closer than you think.
As a member country AU Cyprus offers reciprocal healthcare, and indeed this is part of its appeal as a holiday destination among Europeans. However, while the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) offers health benefits in EU countries for UK citizens, it should be remembered that each country has a different health care system. You will not always get the same care as you do with the NHS in the UK. A single trip or annual travel insurance policy is always recommended. Accessing Medical Care in Cyprus: What Covers EHIC

What is the EHIC Rule in Cyprus?

If you need medical treatment in Cyprus and you have a valid EHIC, you are entitled to a low cost or sometimes free treatment. It should be noted, however, that your EHIC does not apply in the Republic of Cyprus, which is the northern part of the island where the government has little control over what is happening. If you visit this area, adequate annual travel insurance or even a single travel policy is a must.

As in most EU countries, EHIC does not cover personal care. If you only have your EHIC with you in Cyprus, you need to find a state-funded doctor or hospital. Regular travelers, however, with annual travel insurance may be able to access private health services and reclaim all costs.

Changes in Rules Accessing Medical Care in Cyprus: What Covers EHIC

In 2013, the nominal fee goes into effect for medical treatment in Cyprus. All citizens of Cyprus and EU citizens now have to pay 3 euros for GP visit, 6 euro for specialist visit and 0.50 euros for each treatment received. If Cypriots do not have a medical card, or visitors do not have an EHIC, this fee is higher. Emergency treatment for Cypriot medical cards or EHIC holders costs 10 euros, although pensioners (including pensioners from EU countries) are exempt from paying this.

Hospital visit Accessing Medical Care in Cyprus: What Covers EHIC

Non-urgent hospital visits in Cyprus, such as in the UK, require a referral, and your login will be asked for your EHIC. This entitles you to treat with the same rate of decline as the Cypriot population.

While EHIC is a valuable tool for identifying who you are and where you are from – and thus what kind of medical treatment you want – peace of mind actually comes from having adequate insurance. Single travel policy will be enough if you only take one trip abroad a year. If you are planning on doing some trips to the EU, the comprehensive annual travel insurance policy is the way to go.

Patrick Chong is the Managing Director of InsureMore, an award-winning specialist team in a single global travel and annual travel insurance policy. Impact of FCO Travel Advice for your Insurance

Impact of FCO Travel Advice for your Insurance

Today’s journey can almost be described as science. Where many ordinary people think romantic about being careful of the wind and fearlessly embark on adventures with the unknown, we now have to sprinkle those impulsive impulses with careful doses and healthy common sense.
Thank goodness you do not have to pack a crystal ball in your suitcase to ‘get to know’. The miracle of modern technology will give you all the information you need. While traveling to some of the few rare hidden gems in the world such as the Middle East, travel insurance is a must, and it is best to read all the prints well.

Impact of FCO Travel Advice for your Insurance

Play by rules

The world is still, most definitely, a beautiful oyster, full of enormous experience and curiosity. Many travelers feel attracted to less standard goals in pursuit of a truly authentic experience. Since many of these places are not considered ‘typical tourist destinations’, their landscape, culture and way of life are all untouched by the modern western world.

However, when visiting these countries, it is even more important to examine their laws, regulations, and customs before traveling to ensure your own safety and to respect your host. For example, during a visit to the Middle East, travel insurance is an absolute must but so also recognize and respect local traditions in terms of dress, behavior and behavior.

Feasibility test Impact of FCO Travel Advice for your Insurance

Once you’ve researched your proposed goal, it’s time to read all the nice prints on your travel insurance. Should often refer to the FCO website (Foreign and Commonwealth Office) to get the latest report on the physical and political status of any destination country. Fortunately, these updates are easily accessible by computers and phones these days, so stay alert and alert before and during your visit can be second nature.

Also, know that the travel insurance industry, with your best interests, also monitors and follows all recommended FCO travel guides. So, if the FCO says ‘do not go’, you will not be able to afford a decent and comprehensive travel insurance for that purpose.

hot spot

If your destination is in the Middle East, travel insurance may be very expensive and may exclude certain geographical areas of your plan. For example, currently the FCO has advised against all trips to Yemen. Although beaches and landscaping such as in Yemen, civil conflict and terrorist attacks in the country have marked them as an official ‘no-go’ zone. FCO even went so far as to suggest all the foreigners to leave as soon as possible. As a result, no matter how much you decide to spend your Christmas on one of the idyllic beaches in Yemen, you will not be able to buy travel insurance, and it may be difficult to find travel options to the country.

Another suggestion of FCO is more precise and detailed. If you travel to Jordan in the Middle East, travel insurance may be available but may have geographic limits for coverage within the country. FCO is very cautious when visiting Jordan in general, but raises their warning for an area 3 km from the rest of Syria. The potential for wild mortars, small arms fire and terrorist attacks have increased in recent months and pose significant risks to residents and visitors.

Stay alert

FCO is an excellent source of up-to-date information on the political and geographic status of any destination. Most travelers prefer not to put themselves at risk when traveling, especially when traveling for pleasure. The FCO monitors the pulse of world conflict so that travelers can make wise decisions about their safety. Unfortunately, until there is political unrest and violence in the Middle East, travel insurance will remain high or may not be available. The beauty of these countries must wait to be discovered.

Fun Facts About Skiing to Amuse the Kids

Fun Facts About Skiing to Amuse the Kids

I think that there is no type of family holiday that’s better than a ski holiday in a catered chalet. Family skiing trips allow you to bond, spend quality time together in a unique set-ting and try new activities. In addition to this, you definitely won’t have to spend time cooking if you book a catered chalet! You can benefit from the cosy accommodation’s roominess and great facilities. This will create many happy memories that you will all look back on fondly.
If you want to pique the kids’ enthusiasm in the run-up to the holiday, there is no better way than intriguing them with some fun facts about skiing. Here is a collection of my fa-vourites.

Origins

There is some debate about where the thrilling winter sport of skiing originated. Many claim that it was invented in the snowy terrain of Norway, as ancient carvings about ski-ing have been discovered in this area. Another reason for believing that it first began in Norway is that the word ‘ski’ comes from the Old Norse word skíð, which translates to ‘a piece of wood’.

Sounds like a solved case, right? Wrong! It is thought that tribesmen in the Altai Moun-tains (in Central and East Asia) were shredding powder even before the Scandinavians. A ski that dates back to approximately 8000-7000 BC was uncovered near a lake in Russia, creating an interesting debate about the true origins of this hugely popular activ-ity.

Early Form of Transportation

Back in these prehistoric days, it is unlikely that people were skiing for fun. Instead, the sport surely served as an early form of transportation. It is easy to see why, as it provides the ability to quickly travel across challenging terrain – it’s not surprising, then, that skiing was even used as a mode of transportation during the First and Second World Wars.

Heard of a Snurfer?

Let’s quickly turn our attention to snowboarding. Did you know that the very first snow-board was called a ‘snurfer’? This somewhat comical name was given to a contraption that was invented by the American Sherman Poppen in 1965, when he connected two skis to create a skateboard without wheels. Unfortunately, the funny name did not stick, but about one million snurfers were sold over the next decade.

Olympic Sport

Alpine/downhill racing originated in Sweden and dates back to 1879, but it did not be-come an Olympic event until 1936. This is unlike cross-country skiing, which has been a part of every single Winter Olympics since its inaugural year in 1924. In contrast, snow-boarding only made its Olympic debut at the 1998 Games in Nagano, Japan.

Space Skiing

This fun fact is certainly one to remember. Astronaut Harrison Schmitt, who was on the famous space shuttle Apollo 17, claims that our moon has the perfect terrain for cross-country skiing and that this technique could actually help astronauts traverse its surface. Who knows – perhaps one day families will be able to book lunar ski holidays!

Speed skiing – faster than a car!

Skiing is one of the fastest sports in the world, and some speed skiers can reach speeds that are faster than a car! Passenger cars can reach speeds of around 120 mph, whilst the current world record for skiing is a blistering 156.2 mph. This was set by the Italian skier Simone Origone in 2006.

A Global Activity

Skiing is immensely popular in modern times, and those who have experienced the adrenaline rush and awesome surroundings know why! You can find ski resorts in around 80 countries worldwide, and approximately 350 million people visit these resorts every year.

These fun facts are sure to dazzle your little ones – consider sharing them before your trip or possibly in your catered chalet after a fun day on the slopes!

Introduce Students to the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

Introduce Students to the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

For children of all ages, the opportunity to enter the fantasy world filled with the fun of the “happiest places on earth” is fascinating. The Disneyland® Paris school trip offers a hard-to-match experience of fun, but for teachers charged with the organization, it can be influenced by the logistical challenges of a passionate 30 youngsters at one of the busiest amusement parks in the world. Introduce Students to the Most Beautiful Places on Earth
Make Most of the magic moments

As one of the most visited tourist parks on the planet, this is not just a matter of counting the heads of students, transporting them across the Straits and directing them toward attractions. Disneyland® Paris school trips require planning and thought when things go well and every member of the group has time in their lives.

Understand the Group as Individual

Along with the standard information collected on the consent form, understanding the child as an individual is very important. This includes not only medical data on epilepsy, asthma or motion sickness, but also causes problems such as fear of darkness or altitude, and vertigo. With this knowledge, it is easier to identify rides or attractions that do not fit. Introduce Students to the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

Planning is Paramount

One of the most valuable tools for those responsible for planning schedules is the interactive map, which can be downloaded from Park’s website. Its functionality allows the bird’s eye view from the layout to determine the location of the facility, and filters to narrow the attractions of age and interests accordingly to save time.

Know the layout

Understanding the basic thematic layout of the Park is very important. Each of the five areas has unique nuances, and how long is allocated to each will depend entirely on the needs and desires of the group.

• Main Street: The first meeting through a revolving door takes visitors and drops them straight to the United States of the nineteenth century. This is where the Disney Magic parade takes place and that is also the point of departure of the steam train.

• Frontierland: Wild West lives in Frontierland; from a trip of Thunder Mountain that stops by heart, to the gentle sensation of paddling around a large man-made lake.

• Adventureland: Is there a living child who is not fascinated by stories of pirates and adventurers in and off the high shore? Adventureland wait!

• Fantasyland: For the younger group, the miracle of the Princess Bedroom is the beginning of all these fantasy fantasies.

• Discoveryland: As for older pupils, discovering the world of lasers and futuristic space travels is exciting and even thrilling!

Visiting Walt Disney Studios® Park is another highlight for the group. It houses not only for the many cinematographic and animation technologies that are fascinating, but also for the fastest and most thrilling ride in the National Park: Rock-n-Roller Coaster.

The perfect accommodation is Vital

When children are involved, choosing the right accommodation is essential. Important points to look for are accessibility to this site (with a free shuttle bus to take the kids to and from the Park), and interesting themes to ensure the magic survives even after the end of the day.

There are several more popular visits than the Disneyland® Paris school trip. Committing to an early-focused action plan within the organization will ensure that the experience is the same as teacher fulfillment as well. Introduce Students to the Most Beautiful Places on Earth

Underwater Shipwrecks: The Most Dramatic of Dive Sites

Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just starting out, there’s an undeniable romanticism and sense of adventure around wreck dives that you won’t be able to get elsewhere. The excitement builds while you’re in a speedboat zipping through the immense expanse of blue, wind whipping your hair and you into a frenzy. At 180 metres (600 feet) long, this is the largest shipwreck you can dive in the Caribbean. If you have your full wreck dive insurance certifications then you’re in for even more fun as you’ll have multiple chances to enter the wreck.

You’ll be like a kid in a sweetshop deciding which dives to do — some of the most popular include the 500 foot (153 metre) Shikoku Maru and the 440 foot (134 metre) Fujikawa Maru.
